This Monday was definitely one of my most fulfilling food adventures ever. We travelled to Raffles Place and got off to walk in great big circles seeking for the hidden Ju Chun Yuan.
Ju Chun Yuan is a reasonably priced restaurant located near Far East Square. Price is only about $23.35 for the lunch buffet. (11.30AM to 3.00PM) It was much cheaper than normal as their service charge costs were stripped away just recently.
The moment we set eyes on the place we knew we were in for a big treat. Their interior was beautiful. There was a wooden staircase winding up to the second floor where large square tables stood draped with pristine white cloths. The place was hushed with white curtains blocking half the glaring sunlight from spillage. There was even a guzheng on display!!!! Talk about top-notch classy ambience.
We were seated and had piping hot cups of chrysantemum tea served. All was well despite my protesting stomach.
Previously, such a place was so out of my radar that it surprised me and tempted me to no end when J told me about it. We were all attacked by bouts of dimsum cravings at that point so Ju Chun Yuan sounded too incredible!!!
Once we were seated, we were given a sheet of paper that contained a plethora of over 50 dimsun varieties to choose from. Being the kiasu singaporean gluttons we were, we drew a mark beside almost every available option we could find.
I'd say the service was quick, and the waitress was really attentive to our needs.
My favorite food? Definitely the baked barbecued pork buns. They're the triangular shaped ones depicted right down in the picture below - flavoursome, moist pork encased by a flaky and tender pastry. It's a must try!!!
Another dish I especially liked would be the salted egg custard buns (it's the green round baos depicted below) The process of peeling it in half was LETHAL!! Salted egg custard leaked out from the innocent, fluffy and light bun the moment I got the two halves separated. At first the salted egg custard was a little bit too strong for my liking, but the pandan skin of the bun overruled my doubts about it. I wish I had videoed down the oozing process of the warm custard. #kiasuproblems
After ages of unyielding ordering and hiding of scrapes from the watchful waitress, we finally got down to the highlight of the day - dessert!!
There were only a few dessert options and we decided to try one of each. That obviously didn't turn out so well because the durian and french cream pancake was sooooooooooooooooo yummy and it just wasn't enough for us greedy gluttons. We thus ordered a few more plates and swooped down upon them like starved vultures.
I hope my pictures did the food justice!
